Mercedes has invariably been among the top teams in Formula 1 since 2014, but this season is different. The gap to Red Bull Racing and Ferrari is immense for the time being, while an immediate solution is not imminent. That’s what several Mercedes engineers note to Auto, Motor und Sport.
From the so-called hybrid era, which started at the beginning of the 2014 season, Mercedes was the best team on the grid. With six world titles won by Lewis Hamilton and a world championship won by Nico Rosberg, Mercedes was one of the top teams in Formula 1 for many years.
Partly due to the rule changes that took place this year, Mercedes is struggling to keep up with the competition. The German racing team not only lacks the engine to fight for the trophies, also on other parts of the car Mercedes has to improve a lot in the coming months. “A maximum of one or two tenths of the gap comes from the engine,” engineers told the outlet.
Mercedes has difficult season ahead
Mercedes’ poor results are disastrous for its title aspirations. Several analysts think that the Germans can forget about a new world title. For example, Allard Kalff stated earlier this week that Mercedes’ challenge is expected to be too great for them to win the world championship.
